Essential Gear Checklist for New Fighters: Everything You Need
Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can be intimidating, and not knowing what gear you need makes it worse. This checklist breaks down exactly what you need based on your chosen combat sport, organized from "buy immediately" to "buy when you're ready."
Universal Essentials (All Combat Sports)
These items are needed regardless of which martial art you practice:
Mouthguard ($5-30): Non-negotiable for any contact training. Start with a boil-and-bite model. Upgrade to a custom-fitted guard if you stick with the sport.
Athletic cup/groin protector ($15-40): Required for any sparring or drilling involving kicks, knees, or takedowns.
Water bottle: A large (32 oz+) water bottle. You'll drink more than you expect.
Gym bag with ventilation ($30-60): A bag with mesh panels or ventilation to prevent your gear from developing permanent odor.
Towel: A small workout towel for wiping sweat during training.

Budget Tips
Don't buy everything at once. Start with the Day 1 essentials and add sparring gear when you're ready for contact. Most gyms have loaner gear for your first few classes. Focus your budget on gloves β they're the one item where quality matters most. Hand wraps are cheap and should be bought in multiples. Check if your gym has a pro shop β they often offer discounts to members.
