    Gear Care & Maintenance

Proper care extends the life of your equipment and keeps it hygienic. Follow these tips to get the most out of every piece of gear.

    πŸ₯ŠBoxing Gloves

    • Wipe the exterior and interior with antibacterial wipes or a damp cloth after every session.
    • Never store gloves in your gym bag β€” remove them immediately after training and let them air dry.
    • Stuff gloves with newspaper or cedar inserts to absorb moisture and eliminate odour.
    • Use a dedicated glove deodoriser spray between sessions to prevent bacteria build-up.
    • Apply leather conditioner to genuine leather gloves every 2–3 months to prevent cracking and drying.
    • Keep gloves out of direct sunlight, as UV exposure degrades leather and synthetic materials over time.

    πŸ›‘οΈShin Guards

    • Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild soap after every training session.
    • Unbuckle all straps and open the shin guards fully to allow airflow when drying.
    • Spray the interior with an antibacterial spray to kill odour-causing bacteria.
    • Avoid machine washing unless the manufacturer specifically states it is safe.
    • Check straps and Velcro regularly β€” frayed straps reduce protection and fit.
    • Replace shin guards if the padding becomes compressed or the shell cracks.

    πŸͺ–Headgear

    • Wipe the interior padding with antibacterial wipes immediately after use.
    • Allow headgear to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area before storing.
    • Do not leave headgear in a closed gym bag β€” moisture accelerates bacteria and mould growth.
    • Condition leather headgear every few months with a leather-safe product.
    • Inspect the chin strap and closure system regularly to ensure a secure fit during sparring.

    🀲Hand Wraps

    • Wash hand wraps after every 2–3 uses. Place them in a mesh laundry bag and machine wash on cold.
    • Hang to dry β€” avoid the dryer, as heat can shrink the fabric and damage elastic fibres.
    • Roll wraps neatly after drying to keep them tangle-free and ready for the next session.
    • Rotate between two or more pairs so wraps have time to fully dry between sessions.
    • Replace hand wraps when elasticity is lost or the fabric starts to fray, as they no longer provide adequate support.

    πŸ‘•Rash Guards

    • Rinse in cold water immediately after training to flush out sweat and bacteria.
    • Machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
    • Turn inside out before washing to protect printed graphics and sublimation designs.
    • Hang to dry or lay flat. Heat from dryers degrades the compression fabric over time.
    • Do not iron rash guards β€” the synthetic material can melt or warp under high heat.

    🩳Fight Shorts

    • Wash after every training session in cold water on a gentle cycle.
    • Avoid fabric softener, which can break down moisture-wicking properties.
    • Check the Velcro closure before washing β€” close it to prevent snagging other garments.
    • Hang to dry rather than using a dryer to preserve the elastic waistband.
    • Inspect stitching around the split hem regularly, as high kicks can stress the seams over time.

    πŸ₯‹BJJ Gi

    • Wash your gi after every training session β€” never re-wear an unwashed gi, as it spreads bacteria and skin infections.
    • Wash in cold water to minimise shrinkage. Use a mild detergent without bleach.
    • Hang to dry. Avoid the dryer, especially for pre-shrunk gis, as they may still shrink further.
    • For stubborn odours, soak in a mixture of water and white vinegar for 30 minutes before washing.
    • Own at least two gis so you always have a clean one ready for training.
    • Iron or hang the gi while slightly damp to reduce wrinkles if appearance matters for competition.

    🎯Punching Bags

    • Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth weekly to remove dust, sweat, and grime.
    • Condition leather bags every 2–3 months with leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
    • Check the hanging hardware (chains, straps, ceiling mount) monthly for wear and tighten as needed.
    • Inspect seams and stitching regularly β€” a burst seam can cause filling to leak and the bag to lose shape.
    • Rotate the bag occasionally if one side takes more impact to ensure even wear.

    General Storage Tips

    • Store all gear in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Avoid basements and car trunks where moisture accumulates.
    • Use a dedicated gear bag with ventilation panels β€” mesh pockets and air vents help moisture escape.
    • Never leave wet gear in a sealed bag overnight. Unpack and air dry everything as soon as you get home.
    • Consider using a small USB fan or dehumidifier in your gear storage area to keep airflow constant.
    • Keep gear away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which degrade leather, foam, and synthetic materials.
    • Use silica gel packs or cedar shoe inserts inside gloves and headgear to absorb residual moisture between sessions.
