The Ultimate Hand Wrapping Guide for Beginners
Hand wraps are the unsung heroes of combat sports. They protect your wrists, knuckles, and the small bones in your hands from fractures and sprains.
Why Hand Wraps Matter
Your hand contains 27 small bones. When you throw a punch, all of these bones absorb impact. Hand wraps serve three purposes: wrist support, knuckle padding, and hand compression.
What You Need
Get a pair of 180-inch semi-elastic hand wraps. The 180" length gives you enough material to properly cover everything.
Step-by-Step Wrapping Method
Step 1: Start at the Thumb Loop
Place your thumb through the loop with the wrap going across the back of your hand.
Step 2: Wrap the Wrist (3 times)
Bring the wrap around your wrist three times. Keep it snug but not tight.
Step 3: Wrap the Knuckles (3 times)
From the wrist, bring the wrap diagonally across the back of your hand up to your knuckles. Wrap around three times.
Step 4: Wrap Between Each Finger
This is the most important step. The "X" pattern locks each knuckle in place independently.
Step 5: Wrap the Thumb
From the wrist, wrap around your thumb once, then back around the wrist.
Step 6: Cover the Knuckles Again
Use any remaining material to wrap across the knuckles one or two more times.
Step 7: Finish at the Wrist
Bring everything back down to the wrist and finish with the velcro closure.
Common Mistakes
- Wrapping too tight: If your fingers go numb, rewrap immediately.
- Skipping the finger wraps: Never skip them β they prevent knuckle injuries.
- Using dirty wraps: Wash them after every 2β3 sessions.
