How to Choose MMA Shorts: Fit, Features, and What to Look For
MMA shorts need to handle a unique set of demands β kicking, sprawling, grappling, and transitioning between all three. The right pair should move with you, stay in place, and hold up to the rigors of training. Here's how to find your perfect fight shorts.
Fit and Length
Length: MMA shorts typically fall above the knee. Longer shorts can restrict kick height and get grabbed during grappling. Shorter shorts offer more freedom of movement but less coverage. Most fighters prefer mid-thigh length.
Waist: The waistband should sit securely without a belt. Look for an elastic waistband with either velcro, drawstring, or a combination closure system. The shorts should be snug enough to stay up during explosive movement but not so tight they restrict your breathing.
Material and Construction
Microfiber polyester: The most common material for quality MMA shorts. Lightweight, quick-drying, and durable. Resists stretching and maintains shape wash after wash.
Stretch panels: Look for shorts with gussets or stretch panels in the inner thigh and side seams. These allow for full range of motion during kicks without riding up or restricting movement.
Reinforced stitching: Triple-stitched seams and reinforced stress points prevent splitting during explosive movements and grappling.
Closure Systems
Velcro and drawstring: The most secure combination. The velcro provides the primary hold, and the drawstring provides backup security. This is the standard for competition-grade shorts.
Elastic only: Simpler and often more comfortable, but may not stay in place during intense grappling. Better for training than competition.
Features to Look For
No pockets or zippers: These are prohibited in competition and can injure training partners during grappling. Good MMA shorts are smooth on the outside.
Split side seams: Allow for higher kicks without resistance. Most quality shorts have 3-4 inch side splits.
Sublimated printing: Designs that are printed into the fabric rather than screen-printed on top. Sublimated prints don't crack, peel, or fade. They also prevent the rough texture that screen printing can create.
MMA Shorts vs. Board Shorts vs. Compression Shorts
MMA shorts: Purpose-built with no pockets, reinforced closures, and stretch panels. Best for training and competition.
Board shorts: Acceptable for casual training but lack the reinforcement, closure security, and movement panels of proper fight shorts. The pockets and hardware can also be hazardous during grappling.
Compression shorts/Vale Tudo shorts: Tight-fitting shorts worn alone or under MMA shorts. Required in some grappling competitions (No-Gi BJJ). Provide muscle compression and eliminate fabric for opponents to grab.
