10 Best Heavy Bag Combinations for Power and Speed
The heavy bag is your most honest training partner β it doesn't lie about your power, technique, or conditioning. But simply flailing at the bag won't make you a better fighter. You need structured combinations that build real skills. Here are 10 essential heavy bag combinations, from basic to advanced.
Numbering System
We'll use the standard boxing numbering: 1 = Jab, 2 = Cross, 3 = Lead Hook, 4 = Rear Hook, 5 = Lead Uppercut, 6 = Rear Uppercut. For kicks: LK = Lead Kick, RK = Rear Kick.
Beginner Combinations (1-3)
Combo 1: The Classic 1-2
Jab - Cross
The bread and butter of boxing. Focus on snapping the jab out and bringing it back before the cross lands. Drive the cross from your rear hip. Return to guard after each rep.
Combo 2: 1-2-3
Jab - Cross - Lead Hook
After the cross, your body is already rotated to load the lead hook. Let the rotation flow naturally. The hook should be at head level with your elbow at 90 degrees.
Combo 3: 1-1-2
Double Jab - Cross
The double jab establishes range and disrupts your opponent's timing. The first jab is a rangefinder; the second is harder and sets up the cross.
Intermediate Combinations (4-7)
Combo 4: 1-2-3-2
Jab - Cross - Lead Hook - Cross
The four-punch combination. After the lead hook, your body is loaded for another cross. This combo teaches you to stay in the pocket and throw with sustained output.
Combo 5: 1-2-5-2
Jab - Cross - Lead Uppercut - Cross
Mix up levels. The uppercut comes up the middle after the cross pulls your opponent's guard to the outside. Finish with a cross over the top.
Combo 6: 3-2-3
Lead Hook - Cross - Lead Hook
Starting with a hook is unexpected. The cross follows naturally, and the second hook catches opponents who shell up from the cross.
Combo 7: 1-2-3-RK (Kickboxing)
Jab - Cross - Hook - Rear Roundhouse Kick
The punches pull the guard up, opening the body for a devastating rear kick. Time the kick as the hook is retracting.
Advanced Combinations (8-10)
Combo 8: 1-2-3-6-3-2
Jab - Cross - Hook - Rear Uppercut - Hook - Cross
Six punches alternating levels and angles. This is a pressure fighting combination β move forward with each shot.
Combo 9: 2-3-2-LK-2
Cross - Hook - Cross - Lead Kick - Cross
A counter-fighting combination. Start with the cross (as a counter), follow with combinations, kick to the body, then finish with another cross.
Combo 10: 1-2-slip-2-3-6
Jab - Cross - Slip Right - Cross - Hook - Rear Uppercut
Incorporate defense into your offense. After the initial 1-2, slip an imaginary counter, then unload the 2-3-6.
Heavy Bag Training Tips
Move around the bag β don't stand flat-footed in one spot. Visualize an opponent in front of you. Work in 3-minute rounds with 1-minute rest. Mix power shots and speed shots. Always return to your guard between combinations.
