How to Choose Muay Thai Shorts: Fit, Style, and What Actually Matters
Muay Thai shorts look simple, but their design is engineered for a sport built on kicks, knees, and clinch work. The wide leg opening, short inseam, and A-line cut exist for functional reasons β and the wrong shorts can genuinely restrict your technique. Here's everything you need to know to choose the right pair.
Traditional Thai Cut vs Retro vs Hybrid
Traditional Thai Cut
The classic Muay Thai short has a wide, flared leg opening with deep side slits (sometimes called "petals"). This design allows maximum hip rotation on roundhouse kicks and unrestricted knee movement in the clinch. The inseam is typically 3-4 inches β much shorter than regular athletic shorts.
This is the standard in Thailand and in most traditional Muay Thai gyms worldwide. If you're training Muay Thai specifically, this is the cut you want.
Retro Style
Retro Muay Thai shorts sit higher on the waist and have an even shorter inseam than the traditional cut. They're inspired by the shorts worn in the golden era of Thai boxing (1980s-90s). Functionally, they offer the most freedom of movement but can feel exposing if you're not used to shorter shorts.
Hybrid / MMA Style
Some brands offer hybrid shorts that blend the Muay Thai leg opening with a longer inseam (6-8 inches) and sometimes board-short styling. These are popular with fighters who cross-train in MMA and want one pair of shorts for striking and grappling. The trade-off is slightly less hip freedom compared to a true Thai cut.
Waistband Design
The waistband is the most important structural element. Look for:
- Wide elastic waistband (3-4 inches) with an internal drawstring. The wide band distributes pressure evenly and stays in place during explosive movements. A thin waistband rolls and digs in.
- No Velcro or metal closures. These scratch training partners during clinch work and can come undone during hard kicks. A drawstring-and-elastic system is all you need.
- Comfortable on the hips. Muay Thai shorts sit at the natural waist, not low on the hips like board shorts. If they slide down during kicks, they're too big or the waistband is too narrow.
Fabric
Traditional Muay Thai shorts use satin or polyester satin. The slick, lightweight fabric minimises friction during kicks (your leg slides rather than catching on your partner's guard) and dries quickly between rounds.
Modern performance shorts sometimes use moisture-wicking polyester with sublimated prints. These are more durable than satin and hold their shape better through repeated washing, but they're slightly heavier and don't have the traditional satin sheen.
Avoid cotton. It absorbs sweat, gets heavy, and restricts movement when wet.
Sizing
Muay Thai shorts typically use a single-size elastic waistband system rather than exact waist measurements. Most brands offer S/M/L/XL with generous overlap thanks to the elastic. Size based on your waist measurement at the navel:
- Small: 28-30" waist
- Medium: 30-33" waist
- Large: 33-36" waist
- XL: 36-40" waist
When in doubt, size down. The elastic stretches with wear, and loose shorts slide during training. A snug-but-comfortable fit on day one will be perfect after 2-3 sessions.
Style and Design
In Thailand, short designs often carry meaning. Certain patterns, colours, and sak yant-inspired artwork represent specific gyms, regions, or fighting lineages. Outside of Thailand, design is largely personal preference.
That said, bright colours and bold patterns are a tradition, not a trend. The ornate embroidery, metallic accents, and vivid colour blocking you see on Thai shorts are part of the sport's cultural identity. Embrace it.
How Many Pairs Do You Need?
At minimum, two pairs β one for training (that can get sweaty and beaten up) and one for sparring or grading days. If you train 4+ days per week, three pairs keeps you rotating through laundry without running out. Muay Thai shorts dry fast, so even with frequent washing they last well.
